Our story began, by my Grandfather asking if I wanted a penpal! I wasn’t initially excited, until I saw her picture – I then was very, very keen on somehow getting to know Miss Shawn Mayville.
I can’t explain our story except by saying, “Look what God did!” Wow, I never dreamed I would be marrying such a beautiful, godly lady. I’ve discovered, Shawn isn’t actually the girl I dreamed of, she’s better! That may sound mushy, but it’s true, and I’m so grateful to the Lord. (Prov. 19:14)
We emailed back and forth for several months, and I quickly fell head over heels in love, though it took me long enough to actually say those words. We didn’t meet in person until we’d corresponded for five months. Seventy emails, sixty hours of FaceTime, and ten thousand texts later, we wondered the inevitable question… would it be the same in person?
Much to my surprise, we fell even more in love! As we spent time together, I couldn’t help but think, “Lord, this is too good to be true!” She’s completes me perfectly, she’s ministry minded, she’s extremely hard working, she’s very sharp, she’s likeminded, she’s absolutely gorgeous. I’ve discovered, dear Shawn is another example and my best example of Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time.” (no pun intended!) We probably both would have chosen to meet sooner, but God has given us the opportunity to serve, prepared us, and now we look forward to serving Him together.
Teaching in a Christian school and serving in my church kept me busy enough during my single years. In spite of my “on-the-go” lifestyle, I still wondered when God might bring someone special into my life. Psalm 37:5 was a huge encouragement- whatever God truly wanted- He would bring to pass!
It was a regular Sunday morning when I was approached by “Grandpa” Crego. He began to ask what interest I would have in writing someone in Ireland. “Writing a girl from Ireland?! How neat would that be?” I soon found out that he was really referring to a certain grandson of his…”one of the triplets” he said.
That quickly turned into emails back and forth. I never knew I could be so excited about anticipating and reading an email! Everything he shared caused my interest to grow and quickly I began to think there was something very special about this Andrew Canavan. At the time we were thousands of miles apart, and yet our hearts, and minds, and desire to serve God were already heading in the same direction. While busy living our day-to-day lives, God had been busy preparing us for each other. That is what everyone wants, right? A love story written by God Himself.
Upon our first meeting at Christmas, I felt we complimented each other quite well. I adored Andrew’s calm demeanor, he made me laugh, we had much in common, and we just completely enjoyed spending time together. The more I discovered about him and the more I saw his heart, the more I began to think that he indeed was the special person God had kept just for me!
Andrew has come to be my very best friend. I love him so much! Now that our wedding is only a few months away, I just cannot wait to begin our new life together.
Our relationship has been one of almost continuous countdowns! We are grateful, concerning our long-distance relationship… This is the final one!
